The Ink Pedia is committed to producing accurate, well-researched, and trustworthy content about tattoos, body art, and related health and culture topics. This Editorial Policy outlines the standards we hold ourselves to and the process behind every article we publish.

Our Mission

To be the most trusted tattoo information resource for US audiences — combining accurate medical guidance, practical advice, and cultural context into content that helps people make informed decisions about their bodies.

Editorial Independence

The Ink Pedia operates with full editorial independence. Our content is not influenced by advertisers, sponsors, or commercial relationships. Recommendations, warnings, and factual claims are based entirely on research and authoritative sources — not on who is paying us.

Source Standards

We prioritize primary and authoritative sources in all health and legal content. Our standard reference hierarchy is:

  1. Peer-reviewed medical journals (BMJ, JAAD, JAMA, NIH PubMed)
  2. Government and regulatory bodies (FDA, CDC, NIH, ACOG)
  3. Professional medical associations (AAD, ASDS, APA)
  4. State and federal legislative records (for legal/age articles)
  5. Industry associations (NCSL, PBAA) for non-medical claims

We do not accept anecdotal evidence, forum posts, or unverified social media claims as primary sources. All cited sources are linked in the Citations section of each article.

YMYL Content Standards

Articles covering health, safety, pregnancy, infection, medication, and legal age requirements are classified as YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) content. These articles undergo additional scrutiny:

  • All health claims are cross-referenced with at least two authoritative sources
  • Medical disclaimers are included at the article level
  • Crisis resources are included in articles covering mental health topics
  • Dermatologist recommendations are referenced from the AAD where applicable

Content Update Policy

Tattoo laws, medical guidance, and pricing data change over time. We commit to reviewing and updating articles when:

  • A law or regulation changes in a state or at the federal level
  • Major medical organizations update their guidance
  • Reader feedback identifies a factual error
  • Articles reach 12 months since last review

Updated articles display the revised date at the top of the article. The original publication date is retained where relevant.

Corrections Policy

We take factual accuracy seriously. If you identify an error in any of our articles, please contact us through our Contact page with the article URL and the specific claim you believe is incorrect. We will investigate and correct verified errors within 5 business days, noting the correction at the bottom of the article.

AI and Writing Tools

The Ink Pedia uses AI tools as part of the research and drafting process. However, all published content is reviewed, edited, and verified by a human editor before publication. AI-generated content is never published without human oversight, fact-checking against primary sources, and editorial judgment on accuracy and tone.
